Fibromyalgia & Mandatory Exercise
From: About.com Fibromyalgia Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

I know I need regular exercise, but even before I had fibromyalgia I wasn't good about it. The only times in my life I've been consistent have been when the exercise was mandatory, like when it was a high school or college class, or when I had to walk or ride a bike because I didn't have a car. Now, with symptoms that fluctuate from day to day, I find it very hard to be consistent. I know there's a ton of clinical and anecdotal evidence showing that with fibromyalgia, consistent, moderate exercise can really help, and I know when I've been better about exercising it has helped; still, it can be hard to find the motivation. On bad days, I don't want to do anything, and o...

Debunking Myths: 'More Exercise' for Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

It's basic physiology -- when you feel sluggish, unmotivated and fatigued, getting up and doing some exercise causes changes in your body that boost your energy. Exercise also releases endorphins in the brain, and endorphins are great pain killers. So when people say those of us with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome would feel better if we got "more exercise," there's something to it, right? Actually, no. In normal, healthy people, yes -- exercise creates energy. Problem is, we're not normal and healthy. Exercise is a tough subject, whether you have fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. However, it's not the same for both groups, so let's...

Pain & Post-Exertional Malaise in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Research Brief A new study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine shores up support for post-exertional malaise and exercise limitations in chronic fatigue syndrome. It also demonstrates a change in pain threshold after exercise. Researchers monitored participants before, during and after bouts of exercise. They found that the people with chronic fatigue syndrome not only felt substantially worse after exercising, their pain thresholds dropped. In healthy participants, pain thresholds went up. The pain threshold marks the point at which the body interprets sensation as painful. That means things that would not have caused pain before exercise will cause it afterward, which could at least partially account for the increase in overall pain people with chronic fatigue syndrome e...

Cooking With Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

It's hard to avoid cooking, but I sure wish I could! I was OK with it before I had fibromyalgia, but now the very thought of it stresses me out. If I'm doing something really simple and familiar, cooking's not too bad. When I have to keep track of multiple things, or go through a multi-step process, I can forget what I'm doing and get overwhelmed. When your family is waiting for dinner and you find yourself lost in the brain fog and on the verge of ruining it all, it can definitely trigger your anxiety! In my early fibro days, when I was still working full time, I'd pick up the kids from daycare (where there was unbearable noise), drive home in heavy traf...

Debunking Myths: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or 'Just Tired'?

When an illness is named for its chief symptom, it sounds like that symptom is the only thing that's wrong. Thus, the name "chronic fatigue syndrome" perpetuates the myth that people who have it are "just tired" and not really "sick" at all. This myth is like salt in the wound to people who are disabled by chronic fatigue syndrome. Not only does it go way beyond a single symptom, the word "fatigue" doesn't begin to accurately portray the utter exhaustion and lack of energy these people have. Here are some of the consequences of this pervasive myth, along with the truth: People say, "Just get some rest -- you'll feel better." FACT: Multiple sleep-related abnor...
