Cancer Drug Kills Four Times More than No Treatment at All

Drugmaker Pfizer is pulling Mylotarg, a decade-old leukemia
medicine, off the U.S. market after a study found a higher death
rate and no benefit for patients. Mylotarg won approval under an
abbreviated process. Medicines cleared in that way have to pass
follow-up tests to confirm they work. The FDA asked Pfizer to
withdraw the drug after a recent clinical trial raised concerns
about the product's safety and clinical benefits. Reuters reports:
"The trial ... showed more deaths in the first couple months of
treatment. The fatality rate was 5.7 percent for Mylotarg patients,
compared with 1.4 percent without the drug, Pfizer sa...

Predicting Fibromyalgia: Results of 25-Year Study
Research Brief A follow-up to a large 1976 fibromyalgia study could
help doctors identify who is at risk for developing the condition,
and also may aid in prevention. The study involved more than 3,000
women who had self-reported (not medically diagnosed) fibromyalgia
and other illnesses believed to put them at risk. After 25 years,
136 of them had been officially diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Of
those 136: 95% had prevalent allergies, 95% had severe morning
sickness, with vomiting, during pregnancy, And 95% had smoked
cigarettes. On a personal note, I have to say that only the first
predictor applies to me. While I did have morning sickness during
my first pregnancy, it wasn't severe and I never threw up. I didn't
have a hint of it the second time. I've never...
Fibromyalgia, Blood Flow to the Brain & Drug Response
Research Brief Irregular cranial blood-flow patterns in people with
fibromyalgia may be able to predict who will respond well to the
drug gabapentin, according to a new study published in Arthritis
Research & Therapy. Researchers looked at SPECT scans of brains
before and after treatment with gabapentin and found that people
with a particular set of abnormalities responded poorly to the
drug, while people with a different set of abnormalities responded
well to it. Theoretically, doctors could use this information to
help guide treatment decisions, especially since gabapentin carries
a high risk of side effects. This research also confirms findings
of other studies showing abnormal cranial blood flow in
fibromyalgia, with high levels (hyperperfusion) in some regions and
low levels (...
